Shortage of Jobs for China's University Graduates
When compared with elsewhere, China's economy is still doing relatively well, with an overall urban unemployment rate of only 4.1 per cent in 2012. However, with a record number of about 7 million graduates leaving universities and graduate schools at a time when the number of jobs for new hires has declined about 15 per cent compared with the previous year, 2013 is set to be a terrible year for the Chinese graduates. Employers discriminating against women, out-of-town applicants and graduates from less prestigious institutions have worsened the situation. Some graduates have in turn lowered their expectations. Thankfully, measures have been taken by the Chinese government to alleviate the situation.
